I do believe that the evolution of reality shows is going to continue to take us into darker territories, into a phase where we as humans cross the line. It’s an inevitable human nature to push the envelope to find the boundaries of whatever topic we’re fixated with and this will be no different. For those who have seen the movie The Running Man, Death Race or the upcoming thriller Gamer you’ll understand the absurd nature of the plot where a maniacal warden risks his prisoners lives by having them participate in a deathly game show. It’s a pretty ludicrous template but why is it so far fetched? We can watch people 24/7 already, almost every reality show has competitions that can be mildly dangerous, the most entertaining contestants are the most annoying and evil ones and of course the fact every reality show craves attention more than a hungry newborn shows that it is going to deteriorate at an alarming pace. Throw in that this planet will need population control in the next 100 years as we run out of resources and expand in biblical proportions and it’s clear to see we could one day compete to live or die. Maybe it’d be something like this.
