Pandora is Pimp

Just wanted to share with everyone a sweet service I stumbled upon recently. It does what several other sties, including Yahoo! LanchCast have tried to do over the years, but does it well and most importantly does it free. Basically you tell it a band, song, or genre of music you like, and it goes out and finds other shit you might like and plays it for you. Unlike the other sites that group all the music into a few genres or even worse just track trends of other people who like the same music as you, Pandora uses what it calls the Music Genome Project. The Music Genome Project is basically a bunch of artists who have spent the last few years analyzing songs and putting them into categories. They call these categories “genes” and they have a lot of them. Its almost like eHarmony.com for your I wish I had more music needs instead of your I’m so alone needs.

So one of my favorite songs just came on, its from the band I started this custom radio station with, I give it a thumbs up, and here is a basic description of what it has identified I like in this track.

Yeah thats a lot of stuff and I really don’t know what it all means, but what I do know is Pandora is about to throw me a bunch of songs I’ve never heard of before mixed in with a bunch of stuff I already like. I thumbs up and thumbs down and hey, in just one day I have 3 or 4 bands bookmarked to “buy” on Itunes. Okay I’m just going to soulseek or torrent them when I get home but hey if you are into paying for music then you can use the Itunes and Amazon.com integration.

Oh speaking of integration, its got an Iphone and Ipod touch application that is free. So you can get your stream and favorite on without a computer. You can also find other peoples stations or share your station with your friends. It uses the same federal license as all the other sites that try to offer this service, so you can’t choose any song you want to hear, and you are limited to how many songs you skip through per hour, but its free so I really have no complaints.

Here is a little blurb from the founder explaining the basic service and some FAQs if you are interested.

Head on over to Pandora.com to start finding some new shit you might dig, and if we get enough people using it we could share playlists in the forums and what not.

Update: Apparently, Pandora is US only due to copyright royalty board rulings and may be on the verge of collapse due to rising web radio costs. Sad, but I’m on board ’till it goes under, Titanic style.
